Digital Approaches to Language Development
Language development is one of the cornerstones of children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. Ages 2–6 in particular are a critical period in which children rapidly build their vocabulary and their communication skills take shape. Using the right supportive methods during this period provides important long-term advantages in many areas, from academic success to social adjustment.
Research conducted in recent years has shown that digital apps can be an important tool for supporting children’s language development. In addition to traditional methods, digital platforms enriched with gamification and interactive content increase children’s interest in learning and support lasting learning by providing opportunities for repetition.
Scientific Findings
- In a comprehensive meta-analysis, children who used digital language-learning apps were found to show significant gains in vocabulary and comprehension (Neumann & Neumann, 2017).
- Another study found that tablet-based language-learning games improve children’s syllable awareness and phonological skills (Outhwaite, Gulliford & Pitchford, 2017).
- It has also been reported that apps used under parental guidance produce stronger and longer-lasting learning outcomes in children (Kucirkova et al., 2020).
What Does This Mean?
This research shows that well-designed, science-based digital content can support children’s language development in a positive way. However, the important point here is that the app’s content is reliable and parents are actively involved in the process.
Guided by scientific research, Suufle aims to support children’s language development with its gamified content. This way, parents can guide their children’s developmental journey confidently and effectively.
